Re: augmentin antibiotics
Yip apparantly it is the generic of Augmentin. Maybe phone your pharmacy and double check.
If you do give it to him make 100% sure you freaking triple the dose of probiotics and watch him like a hawk. Loads of yougurt etc.
Some kids are fine with it. Others not so much.
If you are nervous to give it to him ask the Dr to prescribe something less hectic. It is still a good drug but can cause havoc.

Re: augmentin antibiotics
I think it's the same thing, or "group" as it's both "Amoxicillin treatment", and contains Penicillin.
BUT, Josh has been on other forms of penicillin before and the outcome is not near as bad as it is with Augmentin. (It's just augmenting that reacts this way with him)
Sheena has a good point there, start from the onset with probiotics and extra yogurt. Don't wait for any side-effects to appear, if any.

1.3 Otitis media
Acute otitis media
Acute otitis media is an infection of the middle ear that occurs mostly in infants and children under two years
of age. The bacterial pathogens most often implicated are Streptococcus pneumonia and Haemophilus
influenzae. Bacterial infection is suggested by the presence of acute onset of pain in the ear, fever and
redness, and decreased mobility of the tympanic membrane. Patients presenting with these signs require
antimicrobials and analgesics; meningitis can be a complication.
Antimicrobial treatment
Routine use of antimicrobials in decreasing the duration and severity of symptoms and preventing
complications is not recommended. The condition may be observed for about 48 hours before use of
antibiotics, except in children younger than two years old and in immunosuppressed states.
• First-line treatment
Amoxicillin 500mg (children: 15mg/kg; maximum 500mg) orally every 8 hours for 5 days
For patients who are allergic to penicillins:
Erythromycin 250mg every 6 hours, orally (age > 14 years)
• Second-line treatment
(for patients who do not respond to first-line treatment after 72 hours)
Amoxicillin 500mg + clavulanic acid (children: amoxicillin
7.5 - 15mg/kg + clavulanic acid; maximum 500mg) orally every 8 hours for 5 days
or
Cefuroxime 15mg/kg every 12 hours for 5 days (age > 14 years);
500mg every 12 hours (age > 14 years)
or
Cefaclor 10 to 20mg/kg every 12 hours (age < 14 years);
250mg every 8 hours (age > 14 years)
Sheena has a good point there, start from the onset with probiotics and extra yogurt. Don't wait for any side-effects to appear, if any.

Re: augmentin antibiotics
My GP point blank refuses to prescribe Augmentin or the equivilent to Jordan. He says their systems are not strong enough to handle the side effects.

Re: augmentin antibiotics
Also Viv, DONT accept generics.
Our ENT said that they are not as effective as the real thing regardless of what the pharmacists and doctors might tell you.
But if O has been on Augmentin before and has had no reaction then perhaps you dont have to worry - just give it?

Re: augmentin antibiotics
My GP hates augmentin, it makes me as sick as a dog.
But if he is already on it - you have to give it to him for a minimum of 5 days - open a probiotic tablet and give it to him in a yoghurt 3 times a day
Shame, feel better soon little Othi

Re: augmentin antibiotics
Zithromax is fantastic - usually 3 days only and only once a day.

Re: augmentin antibiotics
I agree with the not takin the generic!! My dr specifically told me not to take the generic for joshua and apparently our paeds spoke to the Dischem pharmacists and told them not to give the generics for the little one's antibiotics as they are not the same!
